November Walk About Tony Chen will guide us through the back streets of the Dongjiaominxiang area and the Underground City. Dongjiaominxiang has the longest alleyways in Beijing and is the area where the former foreign embassies were located. Some of the historical buildings that we will visit are St Micheal’s church, this was built by the French Vincentians in 1902. The former French Embassy which is occupied by the top CCP leaders and the former city bank building which houses the modern Beijing Police Museum with an electronic shooting gallery on its top floor. The Underground City was built by hand at the height of the Sino – Soviet rift between 1969 and 1979. The tunnels were equipped with weapons, hospitals and a large stock of water and food. Mao Zedong envisaged that the vast net work of bomb proof tunnels could provide shelter for 40 per cent of the capitals residence in case of a nuclear attack.
